I grew up surrounded by people with talents. People who could draw incredible images simply by memory, people who could play instruments perfectly, people who had beautiful voices and could sing any song they wanted. I always wondered why God had never given me a talent like that and constantly wondered what my purpose in life was. I was always searching for that answer. I wanted to make people happy with a talent as I witnessed so many others do. But as far as I was concerned, I had none.
Jeremy Camp’s song “Same Power” reminds me of our talents and our duty as Christians to spread the Word of God. The same power that lives in each of us is Christ. We are all branches and He is the vine. Through that vine, His power and Holy Spirit travels to each branch and we each receive different talents to give all the glory to God!
Jeremy Camp is EXTREMELY talented! I can only imagine the fulfillment that comes with him praising God in such a beautiful way and being able to praise God for a LIVING! Take a couple minutes to listen to this song and prepare your heart for God before you continue reading.
Are you aware of your talents? Are you still waiting to find out? Pray to God to either reveal your talent to you or ask Him to use you and your talent to reach others. You will only find true contentment and satisfaction by using your talent when you use it to tell others about God!
Jennifer Smith mentions the gifts of the Holy Spirit in her devotional Wife After God: Drawing Closer to God & Your Husband. There are seven: Wisdom, Knowledge, Counsel, Piety, Fortitude, Understanding, and Wonder. The Holy Spirit distributes these gifts to all of God’s children. I’m so thankful for these gifts! They help us become closer to God and to also spread His Word, His TRUTH!
1 Corinthians 12:4-11 says:
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same spirit; to another faith by the same spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit; to another mighty deeds; to another prophesy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes.
Our gifts, or talents, are given by God and we are to use them for God! By using them for Him, we are thanking Him! For example, the song “Same Power” was written and performed by extremely talented singers and musicians. They are using those gifts to praise God and do what we are all called to do-to spread His Word! To be the light of Christ! That same power of the Holy Spirit reached me through that song. After all these years of Him trying, God finally grabbed my attention and I knew what talent I could use to reach others – writing! I actually don’t know if I truly consider it a talent but I definitely love writing. My goal of this blog is to spread God’s Word to others so that they find comfort, so they find love, so they find peace, so they find joy, and most of all, so they seek God. So that they can better themselves and better their marriages. So they can truly enjoy the beautiful life God gave each of us by leaning on God every step of the way. I want you to get to know God because I want you to experience the joy and peace I have recently felt in my life.
My friend Lauren talks about the comparison game and how it steals joy. Don’t let other’s similar talents and achievements with those talents prevent you from using yours to give the glory to God. That’s the enemy trying to prevent you from doing what God asks you to do. Obviously Satan will throw doubt and comparison your way any chance he gets to interfere with God’s Truth being spread to others! I’ve experienced this doubt myself many times, comparing my blog to other, well-established Christian blogs or marriage blogs. But these other blogs are doing the exact same thing I am doing, telling their stories. Just in different ways. That’s all God asks us to do. To give our witness, to share our story on how we became closer to Him and how wonderfully it has affected our lives and our relationships with others, especially our spouses. Being intimate with God is something He desperately asks from us.
Being intimate with Him creates a door to a whole new relationship with your husband that you can FINALLY open after tearing down all of the walls of fear and worry and pride that have been standing in front of that door.
A great example on the process of using a talent God has given us is my Aunt Mary who wrote a book called God Expects Me: Living the Reality of Life by Embracing the Reality of God. This book is incredible! Her details, honesty, and humor make is easy to read because you can relate to the very down-to-earth words. She was just a regular person living the way the world tells us we should. Seeking the things the world tells us we should. She suffered from severe doubt when writing this book. It took her over 8 years to finish it! But God was persistent and wanted her to publish it, to tell others how much He has impacted her life and to encourage others to seek Him. Her story has been so popular that she has done many witness talks at local churches and she has sold hundreds of books already! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone!
The song “Same Power” created an image in my mind that makes so much sense. Singers like Jeremy Camp thank God for their talents by praising Him. Through his talents, he reaches others and teaches others in that crowd about God. Those people begin to become filled with Christ’s light, or the Holy Spirit, and they begin to learn about and experience the goodness of intimacy with God. They then use their talents speaking about God and filling even more people with God’s promises, words, and hope, filling them with Christ’s light as well. And it goes on and on. It’s a beautiful process God created for us to have a taste of Heaven on Earth.
I used to be hesitant, for the first 27 years of my life, to even mutter the words “Thy Will be done!” to God.
I was afraid I’d lose myself, I was afraid I’d be stricken down and changed forever.
Turns out His Will for us will only lead us to the truest happiness there is out there.
So why not?!
I challenge you to pray to God and ask Him to fill you with the Holy Spirit and to use you as He pleases. To use your talents as He pleases. Tell Him Thy will be done, Lord! and you will be amazed at the results!
